The Last of Us is a post-apocalyptic television series by HBO. Joel, the series’ protagonist, is played by Pedro Pascal. Joel hasn’t had an easy life and finds himself tasked with smuggling the young and defiant Ella, played by Bella Ramsey, out of the quarantine zone and across the United States. Gabriel Luna plays Tommy, Joel’s younger brother. Tommy is a former soldier who holds on to the hope that the world will get better.

Following the massive success of The Mandalorian, Pascal was offered many opportunities when the Star Wars series’ second season wrapped filming. Pascal will reportedly be earning $600, 000 an episode on The Last of Us, easily making him one of the highest paid actors in American television.

While The Last of Us is based on a video game, Pascal wanted his portrayal of Joel to differ from the original character. The actor tried to create some distance between the two Joels and allowed the showrunners to dictate the characterization.

The series’ recurring castmates include Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, and Anna Torv as Tess. Nick Offerman plays Bill, the scrappy mechanic. Keivonn Woodard and Lamar Johnson portray brothers Henry and Sam both of whom are slightly changed from their versions in the video game. While the filmmakers take some creative licence with the story, they confirm that certain shots from the video game are directly adapted and recreated for television. The Last of Us was released on HBO Max on 15th January 2023.
